An evening meal, walked

This is dinner rather than a tasting circuit. Your guide takes you to a handful of places, you sit down at each, and by the end you have eaten a full evening meal made of the dishes Hanoians actually order after work.

Plate of banh cuon and fried pillow cakes with a bowl of dipping sauce on banana leaf

Highlights

  • Thit xien nuong and nem chua ran from the grill stalls
  • Banh cuon or banh goi, depending on the night
  • Banh mi Hanoi, made the northern way
  • Pho ga, bun doc mung or bun cha as the main bowl
  • Local beer, a smoothie, mixed fruit or egg coffee to finish
Plate of dried beef salad with green papaya, herbs and crushed peanuts

How the evening runs

Between 5:30 and 6:00 PM your guide meets you at your hotel and the walk begins on foot. The route depends on where you are staying and on what you say you want to eat — this is the walk to book if there is a specific dish you have come to Hanoi for.

Along the way your guide explains the ingredients and the history behind each dish, which is the part that separates a food tour from simply eating. Hanoi cooking is regional in ways that are invisible until somebody points them out.

You are welcome to request dishes we have not listed. You pay for what you order, so the only limit is appetite.

The walk ends around 7:30 or 8:00 PM. Carry on exploring, walk back to your hotel, or take a taxi — your guide will put you in the right direction.

Changes, cancellation and weather

Let us know at least three hours before the start time if you cannot come, so the guide can be told and the slot offered to someone else.

Heavy rain changes which stalls are open. Your guide will re-plan the route on the way rather than cancel, unless conditions make walking unsafe.

Before you set off

  • Tell us about allergies, intolerances or a vegetarian diet when you book — the route can be built around them.
  • Come hungry and skip the hotel dinner. This is a meal, spread over three hours and six or seven stops.
  • Photographs from the walk may be used in club promotion. Say so in the booking if you would rather they were not.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in the guiding?
Hotel pick-up and an English-speaking student guide for the evening. The food, the drinks and any transport are yours to pay for, along with your guide's share.
Can we choose the dishes?
Yes. Tell us in the booking what you want to try and the guide will build the route around it.
How is this different from the Street Food Experience?
This one is shorter and slower — fewer stops, more time sitting down. The street food walk covers more ground and more dishes.
Do you pick up outside the Old Quarter?
Usually yes, if you are within reasonable walking distance. Put the hotel address in the booking and we will confirm.
Is it suitable for older travellers?
Yes. This is the gentler of the two food walks — short distances between stops and a seat at each one.
