Free walking tours in Hanoi, guided by students who live here

We are a student-run club in Hanoi. Our guides walk you through the city they grew up in, ask nothing for their time, and practise their English while you see the Old Quarter the way locals do.

What a free walking tour with us actually is

Hanoi Free Walking Tours started in late 2012 when a handful of university students decided the fastest way to improve their English was to spend a morning showing visitors around their own city. Fourteen years later the idea has not changed. Our guides are still students, they still volunteer their time, and the walk is still free.

What you get is not a scripted city tour. You get a young Hanoian who will tell you which noodle stall their family goes to, why the pavement is full of plastic stools at six in the evening, and what it is like to grow up in a city of eight million motorbikes. Most of our guests say afterwards that it felt less like a tour and more like a day out with a local friend.

The guiding is free. Entrance tickets, food, drinks and transport are not included — you cover your own, and your guide's, if you invite them along.

Choose a walk

Seven routes, all starting from your hotel in or near the Old Quarter. Half-day walks run at 9:00 AM or 2:00 PM; food walks start in the early evening.

Why travellers keep choosing a student club over an agency

  • Fourteen years of running free tours in Hanoi, with thousands of walks completed every year.
  • Around 700 reviews on Tripadvisor, roughly nine in ten of them five stars.
  • Guides are recruited two or three times a year and trained before they ever lead a walk.
  • Sister club in Ho Chi Minh City, so you can do the same thing in the south.
  • Booking is a form, not an account — no deposit, no card, no voucher.
  • Free, but organised: confirmed pick-up time, confirmed meeting point, a named guide.

How booking works

  1. Pick a walk and send the form with your date, your hotel and how many of you there are.
  2. We reply by email with a guide's name and a pick-up time, usually within a day.
  3. Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby at the agreed time.
  4. If your plans change, tell us at least three hours before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tour really free?
The guiding is. Our guides are volunteers and do not charge for their time. You pay for your own entrance tickets, food, drinks and any transport, and it is customary to cover your guide's share if you eat or ride together.
Who are the guides?
University students living in Hanoi, most of them between 18 and 23. They join through a recruitment round two or three times a year and are trained by the club before leading a walk.
How far in advance should I book?
Two to three days is comfortable. In the peak season from October to April, a week gives us a better chance of matching you with a guide for your preferred time.
Where does the tour start?
At your hotel, if you are staying in or near the Old Quarter. We confirm the exact lobby and time by email before the day.
Can you take children?
Yes. Families are among our most frequent guests, and the half-day walks are short enough for children. Tell us their ages in the booking so the guide can adjust the pace.
What if it rains?
Hanoi rain is usually short. If the weather makes a route unsafe we will offer you an indoor alternative or move the walk to another day — your guide will agree the change with you first.
